RAISEBORE
MINE SHAFTS

Raisebore mine shafts provide a safer and more efficient method for constructing ventilation and mine access shafts. Miller specializes in raisebore shaft construction, delivering rapid, precise solutions that create fully operational mine shafts while minimizing risks and project timelines.

We own and operate industry-leading raisebore equipment, giving us full control over mobilization, scheduling, and costs. This eliminates delays associated with third-party equipment, ensuring faster execution and cost savings. Our in-house expertise and equipment allow us to complete raisebore mine shaft projects with the highest level of safety.

Raisebore Shaft Construction

Raisebore mine shaft construction begins underground, starting with a pilot hole drilled from the surface to the mine level. A reaming head is then pulled upward, enlarging the hole to the desired diameter. This method is faster and safer than conventional sinking, especially for smaller shafts, making it ideal for ventilation and access shafts. It is particularly suited for mine shafts under 24 feet in diameter and requires the mine to be developed under the shaft location.

Scope of work for Raisebore Shaft Projects

At Miller, we take care of every phase of the process, ensuring precise execution while maintaining the highest safety standards.

Pilot Hole Drilling

The process starts by drilling a pilot hole from the surface down to the target elevation. This serves as the route for the drill string that is used to rotate and pull the reaming head.

Reaming with Industry Leading Machines

We use industry leading raisebore machines to pull the reaming head upward, expanding the pilot hole to full diameter. This ensures reliability of equipment during critical drilling phases.

Mine Shaft Collar Construction

A reinforced collar is constructed at the surface to support the reaming process. It also serves as the foundation for future equipment, including hoisting systems and ventilation infrastructure.

Concrete Lining from Top Down

Once reaming is complete, we line the mine shaft with concrete from the surface down. This ensures stability, protects against water inflows, and prepares the mine shaft for hoisting and ventilation systems.

Hoist System Integration

If hoisting system integration is applicable for your mine shaft, Miller can perform all aspects of that project as well. This includes hoisting systems, skips, cages, headframes, and controls, to facilitate the transport of personnel, materials, and ore between the surface and the underground mine.

Ventilation and Fan Infrastructure

Raisebore shafts are often used for ventilation. Miller installs fan foundations, ducting, and electrical controls to ensure efficient airflow throughout the mine.

FAQS

Raisebore mine shaft construction involves drilling a pilot hole from the surface to an underground mine level and then reaming the hole upward to the full diameter. This method is faster and safer compared to conventional shaft sinking.

Raisebore shafts are ideal for smaller mine shafts, such as ventilation or secondary access. The method offers faster construction and greater safety since the reaming process is done from below the surface.

Raiseboring is typically used for ventilation shafts and secondary access shafts with diameters up to 24 feet. It’s ideal when there is already an underground mine level and the mine shaft does not need to be large.

Raisebore projects are typically completed faster than conventional sinking, especially for smaller mine shafts. Project timelines depend on depth, shaft diameter, and geological conditions.
