MINE SHAFTS

Mine shafts are critical infrastructure for any underground mining operation, providing access to ore bodies, maintaining ventilation, and handling personnel and/or materials. The construction of mine shafts requires specialized expertise, precise engineering, and strict adherence to safety standards due to the high-risk nature of the work.

MILLER’S Mine Shaft Construction Services

Mine Shaft Sinking

Miller specializes in mine shaft sinking, using advanced techniques to efficiently excavate vertical shafts for mine access, ventilation, and hoisting systems. Our expert team manages all aspects of the mine shaft sinking process, including drilling, blasting, ground control, and lining, ensuring precise excavation and minimal disruption to ongoing operations.

Conventional
Mine Shaft

Conventional mine shaft sinking involves drill-and blast techniques to excavate large-diameter mine shafts, making it ideal for deep and challenging mining environments. Miller’s experienced team uses industry-leading equipment to ensure safe, efficient excavation, delivering mine shafts that are structurally sound and ready for both hoisting and ventilation systems.

Raisebore Mine Shaft

Raisebore mine shafts are created using a cutting edge technique utilizing mechanical excavation means, minimizing surface disturbance. This method is faster and safer than conventional mine shaft sinking techniques, particularly for smaller diameter shafts. Miller’s raisebore mine shafts offer high precision, economical, and faster project timelines, making it ideal for ventilation and hoisting applications in established underground mining operations.

Inner Seams & Bunkers

Inner seams and bunkers are specialized mine shafts constructed between underground levels, with no surface connection. These unique mining shafts provide access to new mining reserves or serve as infrastructure for ore extraction systems. Miller employs both conventional and raisebore methods to excavate these critical connections, ensuring efficient operation and safe, reliable access to underground mine resources. Our custom engineering solutions are tailored to meet the unique challenges posed by working underground.

WHY INVEST IN A MINE SHAFT?

Access to Deeper Ore Bodies

Mine shafts allow for the extraction of materials from deeper layers, providing access to new, profitable deposits that would otherwise be unreachable.

Mine Ventilation

A well-designed mine ventilation system ensures proper airflow throughout the mine, removing harmful gases and improving the overall air quality, which is crucial for the safety of workers.

Transportation of Personnel and Equipment

Mine shafts serve as conduits for transporting workers, tools, and materials, improving overall mining site efficiency. This is especially important for the safe movement of large equipment.

Hoisting Systems

Mine shafts can be equipped with hoists for the lifting personnel, ore, waste rock, and other materials, making it easier and safer to manage mining production and operations. Miller is your turn-key provider of mine shafts, hoists, hoisting components, and more. Everything is manufactured by Miller.

Featured Project:

Mine Shaft and Fans

Project Scope:

Miller raised a 22 ft mine shaft and completed concrete lining to a 20 ft finished mine shaft. The project included installing two 1500HP fans, motor buildings, insulated ventilation ductwork, and upcasts on each fan. We also installed ventilation controls underground to redirect airflow, installed airlock doors, and two wash-down rings in the mine shaft.

Additionally, we removed old fans and installed a new heating system for winter air flow, along with a condensation run-off pond and an underground water collection sump. To facilitate ongoing inspections, we designed and constructed a mine shaft inspection deck.

Challenges and Accomplishments:

  • Navigated challenging weather, including winter road closures

  • Coordinated multiple specialty teams to meet project timelines

  • Provided the owner with a turn-key solution from site work to fan commissioning.

FAQS

A mine shaft is a vertical passage that provides access to underground mining operations. It allows for the transportation of personnel, materials, and product, as well as the installation of ventilation and hoisting systems.

Mine shafts provide essential access to deep underground mining areas, enable the installation of ventilation systems, and facilitate the transportation of personnel and materials. They are critical for safe and efficient mining operations.

The construction timeline for a mine shaft depends on factors such as the method used (conventional vs. raisebore), geological conditions, and the shaft’s depth and diameter. Miller works closely with clients to develop detailed timelines for each project.

The primary types of mine shafts are conventional shafts, which are drilled and blasted, and raisebore shafts, which are created by expanding a pilot hole drilled from the mine level going upward toward the surface. Each offering has unique advantages depending on the project’s requirements and geological conditions.

Miller utilizes advanced geotechnical surveys and ground control techniques to manage unstable conditions, ensuring the safety and stability of the mine shaft throughout the excavation process.

Yes, you can rehabilitate an old mine shaft with the right equipment, the right conditions, and a solid plan. Miller offers services to repair aging or abandoned mine shafts, including lining, shoring, and updating ventilation or hoisting systems to extend the mine shaft’s operational life.

Mine shafts must meet strict safety and regulatory standards, including MSHA compliance. These requirements focus on structural integrity, ventilation, water control, and emergency systems to ensure the safety of all mine workers. At Miller, we take safety seriously and it is a top priority for all of our projects.
